Where it all Began - A Trip Down Memory Lane in George Town

About the walk

George Town was home to merchants from all over the world. A few hundred years ago the British created their fortress at this very same location, marking their territory. An active centre for trade, the influence of its multi-ethnic roots is visible in its architecture, culture and cuisine even to this day. A range of buildings from different epochs such as the Parry building, Custom House, Anderson Church, Magistrates Court, HSBC Bank depicts the elaborate architectural styles developed and their mixed origins. It is interesting to note the changes to the once prominent harbour town, Royapuram Railway Station, Burma bazaar, the prime locations of commerce in the past that have slowly lost significance with the city’s expansion.

Join us in this journey into the past, to understand what makes this thriving locale unique and forever resilient.

This guided tour is free.
